Special event dedicated to World Photography Day

Sunday 18th August 2024 at 3:55PM

Photographers organized blood donation//medical camp

Chandigarh Photographers Association, Manav Kalyan Parisar, Evoke Builder and Kumar Brothers and Unimark Pharma India Limited jointly organized a program at the Community Center in Sector-22

Mohali: 18th August 2024: (Kartika Kalyani Singh//Media Screen Online)::

The history of photography is very old, but the history of photography's relationship with the media is also not new now. Today's media is incomplete without photos or videos. During this duty of camera with the media, journalists faced dangers many times, but journalists accepted these challenges even by risking their lives. Remembering this period of life related to the camera, photo-journalists also organized a medical checkup camp and also donated blood. It is important to mention here once again that all this was done in connection with World Photography Day.

Chandigarh Photographers Association, Manav Kalyan Parisar, Evoke Builder and Kumar Brothers and Unimark Pharma India Limited jointly organized a blood donation and medical checkup camp at the Community Center in Sector 22, Chandigarh dedicated to World Photography Day. On this occasion, Councilor of Ward No. 22 Anju Katyal and Councilor of Ward No. 17 Damanpreet Singh attended as special guests. Association President Gurcharan Singh and all the members donated blood in the camp and called upon the people to come forward for this work.

All the photographers present on this occasion shared their experiences while sharing their views about World Photography Day. All the blood donors were appreciated by the guests who reached the camp and other people were also asked to contribute in social service. Association President Gurcharan Singh and Chairman Naresh Sharma honored all the blood donors and presented mementos to the dignitaries. On this occasion, people were examined by specialist doctors of Medicine, Orthopedics, Skin, ENT, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Acupressure, Gynecology and Physiotherapy and free medicines were given as per the need. On this occasion, all the members of Chandigarh Photographers Association and Manav Kalyan Parisar as well as photographers associated with various organizations also participated.

It is worth noting that World Photography Day is celebrated every year on 19 August. The purpose of this day is to honor the art and science of photography and appreciate the contribution of photographers. The celebration of this day started with an important announcement made by France in 1839, when they shared the Daguerreotype process with the world, which was the first practical method of photography.

Photography is not only a medium of art, but it is also a way to cherish historical and personal moments. In today's time, the development of digital photography has made it more accessible, making it more popular.

AHRC condemned the Pakistan action against “ARY News” channel

Wed, Oct 22, 2014 at 8:51 AM
A Statement from the Asian Human Rights Commission
PAKISTAN: Government must restore the arbitrarily suspended broadcast license of ‘ARY News’ with immediate effect
The government of Pakistan  through its regulatory body, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned a local television channel, the “ARY News” and has arbitrarily suspended its license for a period of 15 days, and  imposed a fine of Rs.10 million (approximately USD 97,000) for airing on 20th October 2014  an allegedly derogatory programme against the judiciary. Two days prior to the ban, on 17th October 2014, the same regulatory body also banned a talk show tittled “Khara Sach” (the crude truth),  hosted by Mr. Mubashir Lucman, one of ARY’s anchor personalities. The PEMRA said it was acting on the instructions of the single judge bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) who has taken the decision through a Suo Motu action.
The PEMRA, although a mere regulatory body, is infamous for working under influence of powerful groups like the military, the government, and the judiciary. In June this year, in another scandalous incident, the PEMRA suspended the license of yet another popular media channel, the Geo TV, which was the country’s leading news network, following the telecast of allegations that the head of the government’s powerful spy organization, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate, was behind an attempt to assassinate Mr. Hamid Mir, a popular Geo TV talk show host. At the time, even Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif publicly expressed support for Mr. Mir and the media channel; however the government did little or nothing and turned a blind eye at the time when the country’s powerful military establishment was pushing the government to have the channel taken off-air.
As the news of the suspension of the license was aired, a strong reaction and an outcry was generated by journalist bodies, politicians and the civil society which compelled the single judge bench of the Court to clarify, the very next day that it has never ordered the PEMRA to suspend the license of Geo TV. According to “ARY News”, Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi during the hearing observed that the Court had not issued any orders for suspension of the license of ‘ARY News’ and added that the PEMRA had misinterpreted the orders of the Court.
According to the statement issued by the PEMRA the action to ban ‘ARY News’ was in compliance with the order of the single judge bench of the Lahore High Court that ordered the PEMRA to review the talk show “Kara Such”. The Court placed restrictions on airing of this particular show and the participation of Mr. Lucman  in any other TV programme in the future. Later, in the wake of the strong protests from civil society, the politicians and journalist’s bodies,  the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a statement to the effect that “the Court did not order for the cancellation of the license of the ‘ARY News’”. However, the Court has failed to-date to order for the restoration of ‘ARY News’ though it has issued a statement saying that the PEMRA is trying to now put the blame on the Court.
In its previous decisions the Lahore High Court has banned the programme ‘Khara Such’ and also prevented the anchor person, Mr. Lucman from participating in any future programme in any TV channel.
The single judge bench, headed by Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, opposed the actions of the “ARY News” when it aired a programme where it was revealed that the Chief Minister and Justice  Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi  have made a deal with a private company to clear the company of all its corruption charges. Justice Naqvi , then proceeded to institute ‘Suo Motu’ an action, in complete conflict of interest where he himself heard the case and ordered the warrant against the Mr. Lucman the anchor person of ‘ARY Channel’ and the Chief Executive Officer of the same channel.
The freedom of expression in Pakistan has always remained under serious threat from the military, the judiciary, and the government authorities and above to all, by Muslim extremist fundamentalists. With the successive governments the reality of freedom of expression has  grown thinner and more thinner as the right guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan has been further constricted. Apart from the blatant interference by the government, freedom of expression is also being squeezed by non-state actors without any hindrance from the authorities.
As a result, journalists have been at the receiving end of most of the victimizations and every year more than half a dozen journalists are killed by un-known persons and law enforcement authorities.
Journalists and media houses along with the civil society were on the front line during the lawyer’s movement for the restoration of the Chief Justice and the restoration of the independence of the judiciary since 2007 till 2009. However, this time around, the fight for the freedom of expression has come up against the judiciary itself, it has come up against some journalists and media houses who are providing legal cover to these authorities, and it has come up against retired military bureaucrats sitting as heads of the regulatory bodies in Pakistan – so much so that to hold an opinion, to be able to discuss it and to be able to freely express such an opinion has become an impossibility in Pakistan.
In this backdrop, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) urges the government of Pakistan to restore with immediate affect the license granted to the ‘ARY News’ and take appropriate disciplinary and legal actions against high ranking officials of the PEMRA taking such arbitrary decisions to suspend the license of the “ARY News” for suspending the license of ARY News and misinterpreting the decision of the high court. The programme of Khara such which is hosted by Mubashir Lucman must be restored.

                                                                 PRESS RELEASE
The raid by Special Branch of the Delhi police at the Nehru Place office of monthly FORWARD Press on October 9, in which four of its staffers were arrested and the confiscation of the copies of the latest issue of the magazine from bookstalls on October 10 are matters of deep concern and deserve outright condemnation. The police took these actions without order of any court or competent authority. It is said that the action was taken on the basis of a complaint registered at the Vasant Kunj police station.
The latest issue of the magazine is focussed on Bahujan-Shraman tradition. The issue carries articles that interpret the Puranic story of the killing of Mahishasur by Durga as a struggle between the Aryans and the non-Aryans. This may have angered the Hindutvadis, who have been routinely indulging in vandalism in the name of hurting religious sentiments. On the evening of October 9, activists of RSS' students' wing ABVP tried to block the organising of 'Mahishasur Martyrdom Day' function at JNU. The Delhi police action and the ABVP vandalism are closely interlinked and manifest the growing assertiveness of the reactionary, communal-fascist forces since the Modi government coming to power and the aid being extended to them by the government machinery.
The Janwadi Lekhak Sangh strongly condemns the action against the magazine without any proper court order and views it as a violation of the fundamental right of freedom of expression. We also condemn the violence indulged in by the ABVP activists during the observance of 'Mahishasur Martyrdom Day' at JNU. Action should, in fact, be taken against those who do not believe in expression of dissent while sticking to democratic norms. VHP leader Praveen Togadia's recent statement that history books written by Romila Thapar and Bipin Chandra should be burnt is an example of such tendencies.
Janwadi Lekhak Sangh appeals to all democratic and secular forces to unite against such tendencies. We demand that action should be taken against police officials who ordered and conducted the illegal raid on FORWARD Press. We also demand action against the RSS activists who indulged in violence and unruly behaviour at JNU

PAKISTAN: 04 journalists and 05 support staff shot dead

Fri, Sep 12, 2014 at 4:37 PM
A Statement from the Asian Human Rights Commission on this year
38 injured and 06 others received death threats
The Asian Human Rights Commission has received shocking reports of journalists having to face the worst ordeals possible, during the course of the year 2014. Four journalists and five of their supporting staff have been killed by “un-known” persons and more than 38 journalists were attacked and injured by the police and mostly by those representing political parties who are conducting political agitation in the country’s capital Islamabad calling for the government to step down on charges of mass corruption.
Pakistan is ranked 158 out of 180 countries in this year’s World Press Freedom Index and has one of the highest murder rates for journalists. As is evident from this statement there is almost no space for freedom of expression in the country which provides a free playing field for law enforcement authorities and extremist religious forces particularly the militant groups – to act as they please. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced the appointment of a Commission for the protection of journalists but it has remained as only an announcement and no further action has been taken in that regard. Still no mechanisms have been developed to stop the attacks on the media houses. The political parties, the pressure groups and religious militant groups in an effort to dictate their policies continuously attack media houses and journalists.
Several media houses including the Pakistan Television (PTV), the official government channel, was attacked by hundreds of political activists, supporters of Imran Khan, a cricketer turned politician and Dr. Tahirul Qadri, a Pakistani born Canadian national. Broadcasts were stopped for 40 minutes following the capture of the station and after hundreds of people, many armed with sticks, ransacked the Pakistan Television building in central Islamabad, smashing vehicles in the parking lots and cutting transmission cables in the newsrooms. The network said that at least 14 cameras had been stolen.
Reports revealed that on the instructions from the Pakistan Army - by a mere gesture of raising a finger - the army abandoned the occupation of PTV building. However, during this period protesters have attacked and injured more than 100 policemen - as police have been given instructions not to use fire arms against the agitators. A senior police officer, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) was beaten in front of PTV building and has been seriously injured. More than 100 persons inside the PTV building were also harassed and beaten and one lady anchor person has been abused by the protesters.

Four Journalists and five supportive staff killed
In another recent event, on 28th August 2014, the office of the Online International News Network in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan Province, was attacked by “unknown persons” who had shot dead three persons including a prominent journalist, Irshad Mastoi, a trainee journalist, Ghulam Rasool and an accountant. No one has been arrested for the shooting. Since the year 2001, when military operations started in the different parts of Balochistan, to-date 40 journalists have been killed by “un-known persons” and not a single attacker has ever been tried before a court of law.
The phenomena of “unknown persons” has been introduced by the successive military governments which gives impunity to these ‘killers’ and it has been a  common occurence, following  the incident of 9/11 when the military government of General Pervez Musharraf received support from the international community on the “war against terrorism”. Since then, journalists have always been at the receiving end of attacks from these “un-known persons”. Moreover, journalists have increasingly been involved in several incidents of forced disappearances and extra judicial killings including target killings and “un-known persons” have been attributed in all such acts.
On 14th February2014,   a correspondent for the ‘Daily Intekhab’ was attacked and killed in Khuzdar, in Balochistan by “un-known persons”. Prior to his killing, he has been receiving death threats from such persons for reporting on disappearances and extra judicial killings.
On 1st January 2014, a reporter for “Abb Tak Television” was shot dead; shot in the back, while filming outside a pharmacy near the Badah Press Club in Larkana, in the Sindh Province.  The army claimed that the video which he was recording at the time showed medication Dahar bought at a pharmacy which had a "not for resale" stamp on it – and the journalist was killed a few minutes after.

On 17th January 2014, in the North Nazimabad area in Karachi, the capital of Sindh Province, the vehicle – a van belonging to Express TV was attacked in the early hours by “un-known persons” killing three supporting staff working for the TV channel. They wereWaqas Aziz Khan, Mohammad Khalid, and Ashraf Arain. The cameraman was sleeping at the rear seat of the van and thus escaped unhurt.  The Express TV was also targeted by Taliban and other militant groups for criticizing the resurgence of Islamic militancy.

In yet another incident, Geo TV, one of the biggest channels in Pakistan, is continuously under pressure from the ISI – the infamous army intelligence agency for the past four months for naming the involvement of the ISI in the attempted murder of a prominent anchorperson, Mr. Hamid Mir, who received six bullet shots by “un-known” persons while he was travelling in his car.
Since January 2013 to date 19 journalists and 10 supporting staff have been killed and no person has been arrested for these killings.  The tribal area of Khyber Pakhtunkha (KP) Province and Balochistan remained the ‘killing fields’ where most journalists have been attacked and killed.
Attacks and death threats to journalists
Raza Rumi, the anchorperson of Express TV was attacked by “un-known persons” on March 28th 2014, in the city of Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province. He received minor injury but his driver was killed. Rumi was receiving life threats through unidentified telephone calls. After the attack he has fled the country.
On 19th April 2014, a prominent journalist and an anchorperson for GEO TV was critically wounded by six bullets as explained above. The assailants yet remain unknown. He and his family members accuse the ISI and its chief general Zaheerul Islam of organizing the attempted murder.
TV host Imtiaz Alam has also been receiving death threats. A few months ago TV anchor Jasmin Manzoor reportedly cried in front of the Prime Minister and begged for her life. She was threatened to be killed allegedly by a political party, the MQM and then she had to flee the country.
On 22nd August 2014, a prominent columnist for various local and international newspapers and a retired army officer, Kamran Shafi received death threats by mail, from a group claiming themselves to be the ‘Khaki power’ (a term is used for army persons) and these threats have continued for several days. In the threatening mails his nick name which was used during his service in the army has been referred to – a nickname, he claims was only privy to him and his army colleagues.
In the first week of September, Omar Quereshi, the editor of editorial page of Express Tribune and contributor to the German broadcasting house, the DW, has received death threat messages in his private email account.
On 2nd May 2014, GEO TV’s news cameraman Asif Kabir was travelling to the channel’s office in Model Town A, Bahawalpur, Punjab, when three motorcyclists wearing helmets had stopped him. The three men had called him a traitor and an Indian agent and then had assaulted him in broad daylight. The assault left him badly injured and reports stated that the persons had also attempted to steal his camera. As of this date neither case nor investigation has commenced by the police into this incident.
These reports were extracted from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Reporters without Borders and various other media houses in Pakistan;
Jamshed Baghwan, Express News TV’s Bureau Chief in Peshawar experienced a gruesome third attempt on his life by unknown persons. Unknown persons have set up an explosive device outside his house in Peshawar, capital of KP Province. The devise was left in a milk pack in front of the house by men on a motorcycle. The bomb damaged the outside of the building but caused no injuries. This followed an 11-month long string of attacks on the Express Media group personnel and their installations. Some of these attacks have been claimed by the Taliban.
In another incident, unidentified gunmen torched cable TV operator WorldCall’s premises in the southern city of Karachi on 19th July 2014 in order to silence the embattled TV news station Geo News. WorldCall had only recently resumed transmission of Geo News, which the government suspended for 15 days last month. Police and witnesses said between four - six gunmen stormed into WorldCall’s offices, disarmed security guards, ordered employees to leave and then set fire to the place. The blaze gutted the premises but caused no injuries. It also interrupted transmission of Geo News in several parts of the city.
From 14th August 2014 to date dozens of journalists including females journalist have been  attacked and injured by the political workers or activists of Imran Khan and Dr. Tahirul Qadri, who have been agitating against the government outside the Parliament house, the Prime Minister’s house and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
On 15th August 2014 at least four crew members from Aaj News, including digital satellite news gathering engineer Iqbal, cameramen Usmaan, Iqbal, and Samaarat, were beaten up by workers from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party while covering a speech by the PTI leader Imran Khan during a sit-in in Islamabad. The four have been treated in hospital for minor injuries.
On 17th August 2014, as many as eight reporters, cameramen and drivers have been assaulted by the workers in two days alone. Azaz Syed, a star reporter of Geo TV, was abused; his mike was snatched and when he was about to go on air from the rally venue in order to report on the situation on ground. Meanwhile, a mob had encircled him and forced him out of the venue. All this for working for GeoTV. Arshad Waheed, a senior reporter of the network, also came under attack the same day.
On the same day, another Geo TV journalist, Saif-ur-Rehman, came under attack by Imran Khan’s party (PTI) activists who identified him by the mike carrying the logo of the network. He had to flee the scene to save his life. Shabbir Ahmed, a cameraman of Geo TV, had his camera broken by the PTI’s miscreants.  Another cameraman, Khurram Shehzad, was beaten.
On 30th August 2014, when protesters were marching towards the Parliament house to attack there had been a clash between marchers and the police and during this clash, police have deliberately attacked and severely beaten several journalists.
