Dipankar Chakraborty (1941-2013)//From Sanhati
January 29, 2013
Dipankar Chakraborty, leftist author and activist, and editor of the Bengali political magazine ‘Aneek’, passed away at 10.05 PM on 27th January, at his Teghoria residence in Kolkata following a cardiac arrest. He was one of the founder members of APDR (Association for Protection of Democratic Rights). At the time of death he was one of the Vice Presidents of APDR. Aneek was launched in 1964 and has been published uninterruptedly since; except for the 19 months when Chakraborty was in jail during the Emergency. He had been a dedicated supporter of and participant in peoples’ movements in West Bengal, while not holding back from criticizing what he felt were failings of these movements. His loss would be sorely felt in the movemental and intellectual space in Bengal.
Press Release from Aneek
Dipankar Chakroborty (71), the founder-editor of the independent Left journal, ANEEK, passed away on Sunday night. A cardiac patient, he had suffered respiratory problem last evening and died on the way to hospital. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter and grandchildren.
He was born in Dhaka in 1941 and grew up in Murshidabad after the partition. Educated in Baharampur and Kolkata, Chakroborty taught economics at Krishnanath college at Baharampur. he later settled in Kolkata.
A veteran of the Left movement since the sixties, he began publishing and editing ANEEK since 1964 when ruptures in the CPI on ideo-political issues led to first split and birth of the CPI(M).
In the wake of the Naxalbari uprising three years later that had triggered the second split and birth of the CPI(ML), Chakroborty did not join the new party. But he made ANEEK an independent forum for debates on contemporary communist movement, both national and international.
Under his stewardship, ANEEK has become one of the leading left periodical in Bengal and among the few ‘little magazines’ which have survived five decades against all odds. He himself was an accomplished political commentator and had several books to his credit. Chakroborty was jailed by the S.S Roy government during the Emergency. A life-long defender of human rights, he was also one of the founders of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights and its vice-president.
He was always active in the campaigns of release of political prisoners irrespective of the creed of the ruling parties and governments since the seventies. He stood by peoples’ movements and joined protests in their support despite his failng health– from Maruti to Nonadanga.
He was also one of the founders of Peoples’ Books Society, a major publication house and a enthusiast of Little Magazine movement in Bengal.
Noted novelist and activist Mahasveta Devi who knew Chakroborty closely expressed her ‘profound shock’. ” I am deeply grieved. It’s an irreplaceable loss for the human rights movement as well as for me,” the octogenarian writer said. Poet Sankhaya Ghosh, also mourned Chakroborty’s death. ” I feel like losing a near and dear one,” he said. (Courtesy:Sanhati)

Join me in telling Home Minister Ashok to release innocent Naveen Soorinje.
Sign my Petition
Rector -
Naveen Soorinje, a journalist, was arrested for exposing an attack on innocent girls and boys in Karnataka last year.
Journalist exposes attack
31 activists of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike attacked a group of youngsters celebrating a birthday party at a homestay in Mangalore on 28 July' 12. Naveen immediately reported this attack.
The video footage helped the police identify and nab the culprits. The survivor’s parents observed that if it wasn’t for the journalists, their girls would have been raped as well.
Wrongly arrested for doing his duty
Shockingly, along with the attackers, Naveen was arrested by the Mangalore Police. He was slapped with charges ranging from “rioting with deadly weapons”, criminal conspiracy, and using criminal force on a woman with the intention of outraging her modesty.
Release Naveen Soorinje
On Tuesday, I delivered thousands of signatures to Suresh Kumar, State Minister of Law who said that he “believes in freedom of press” and will do what he can to get Naveen justice.
Naveen's arrest is an attack on freedom of press. If enough of us call on the Home Minister of State, R Ashok, he will have to respond or risk appearing heartless.
Thanks in advance for taking action,
In anticipation,
Sudipto Mondal via Change.org
PS: Please forward this to your friends and family and ask them to sign my petition, telling Home Minister of Karnataka, R Ashok to release Naveen and drop all charges against him.

Debate on Sudarshan TV

IS RSS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION?
Respected colleagues:
We are very thankful to Sudarshan TV Channel CEO Shri Suresh Chavhanke  (E-mail: Chairman@sudarshantv.com) and (tel:  no. 011-91 120 2542266)  for arranging a  debate on “Whether RSS is a terrorist organization”,  in response to Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s  remarks that RSS and BJP are promoting Saffron (read Hindu) terror in India.
We are  appalled  at his baseless  assertions.  Sushil Kumar Shinde has done a great disservice to the country by offending  the feelings of millions of patriotic citizens of India.  We consider his remarks as  highly reprehensible and dismiss them with the contempt  they deserve.

It is a matter of great disgrace that in order to garner  some Muslim votes, Congress leaders at the behest of Sonia Gandhi  ( a devout  Catholic Christian),  indulge in defaming and denigrating patriotic Hindu organizations.

Shri Shinde ji should be punished for his reckless and irresponsible conduct.  Preferably,  a  case could be filed against him.  Hindu public should take serious note of such an obnoxious statement and work  to defeat  him  in the next general  election.        Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Indian Investigative Reporter K.K. Shahina

IFJ Deeply Concerned over Criminal Charges against Indian Investigative Reporter
Media Release: India
                            January 15, 2013
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is extremely concerned to learn of the criminal charges filed against investigative reporter K.K. Shahina by police in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
Shahina, who currently works with the weekly magazine Open,  faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy and intimidation of witnesses with intent to commit a crime. The chargesheet filed in the sessions court in the district of Kodagu in Karnataka state, also indicts her under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which is most commonly invoked to deal with terrorist offences.
These charges stem from a story  published under Shahina’s byline in the weekly magazine Tehelka in December 2010, which appeared to cast doubt on the prosecution of a prominent Islamic cleric and political figure on terrorism charges.
Shahina who then worked as correspondent for Tehelka in the state of Kerala, based her story on interviews with key witnesses in the case against Abdul Nasar Mahdani, an Islamic cleric who heads the Peoples’ Democratic Party, active mainly in the state of Kerala. Mahdani has since been arrested and charged by Karnataka police for conspiracy to detonate a series of low-intensity bomb blasts in the state capital city of Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) in July 2008.
Shahina’s story cited several of the witnesses named by the Karnataka police as saying that their testimony has been misinterpreted or distorted in making out the charges against Mahdani.
In March 2011, Shahina was honoured with the Chameli Devi Jain award for outstanding woman media person. The awards citation mentioned her investigative work in defence of civil liberties, among other contributions.
Facing the possibility of arrest since January 2011, Shahina approached the district court in Kodagu for anticipatory bail, but was turned down. It was only in July 2011 that the Karnataka High Court granted her provisional immunity from arrest. With charges now formally registered in the sessions court, she will be required to appeal for renewal of her bail and also travel from her base of Kochi city in Kerala, to Madikeri in Kodagu district for every hearing.
The IFJ calls on the authorities in Karnataka state to reconsider their intent to prosecute Shahina, whose work has been an example of investigative journalism in the cause of civil liberties.
“We see this prosecution as an instance of seeking to silence fair and independent reporting through legal injunction. We fear that the process of the law, with the demands it makes on the time and energy of the defendant, is often punishment in itself and will severely impair this journalist’s professional effectiveness.”
